Fourteen companies were invited to the trip, accompanied by representatives from Unión Papelera and the Sappi Ibérica team. They visited the Sappi Gratkorn factory, providing a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the heart of Sappi and witness firsthand its dedication to innovation, sustainability, and excellence.

During the visit, they gained in-depth knowledge of the technical details related to the manufacture of our papers. Additionally, they had time to explore Graz, enjoy its surroundings, savor its gastronomy, and sample the wines of the Styrian region, which is the capital of Graz.

The Gratkorn mill, with over 400 years of experience in papermaking, produces 980,000 tonnes of high-quality coated papers annually and 250,000 tonnes per year of bleached chemical pulp (TCF) for its own consumption. It serves as the main production center for Magno papers – a chemical paste-coated paper used by customers worldwide for high-end publications, including art catalogues, books, magazines, annual reports, and calendars. Furthermore, the factory produces various types of Wet Glue label papers.

Situated near the Mur River, the factory recently completed the second phase of a modernization project consisting of three phases. In this second phase, hydroelectric generation increased by almost 10%, and CO2 emissions decreased by more than 30% in 2022 due to the switch from a coal-fired boiler to a multi-fuel boiler. Through these efforts, Sappi solidifies its position as a global producer of coated graphic paper and enhances the sustainability of the Magno paper range’s production.
